These standards are intended to ensure that those in our community who are most jective susceptible to the effects of poor air quality, such as children, the elderly and those with lung disease, do not suffer any form of ill health.

Air quality review and assessments

A requirement of the Environment Act is that Charnwood regularly undertake an air quality review and assessment in order to determine whether air quality objectives are likely to be met.

Air quality management areas

Charnwood has no Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) currently declared within the borough.

Four areas had previously been found to be at risk of experiencing air pollution from nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide or particulate matter (PM10) at levels above those set out in the UK Air Quality Regulations.  These 4 areas were officially revoked in September 2024.

Further infomation on the consultation process leading to this decision can be found on the 'Air Quality Management Areas removed in Charnwood' page.
