All new drivers and private hire operators must successfully complete the e-learning Safeguarding Awareness Training Course.

This is to ensure that all Hackney Carriage, Private Hire drivers and Operators have a good understanding of what their safeguarding responsibilities are and an awareness of the best practices and protocols when carrying potentially vulnerable passengers.

If you have already attended a safeguarding course, this may be considered a suitable alternative.

Charnwood Borough Council’s course is provided by the Blue Lamp Trust and covers:

  • Understanding what is meant by the term safeguarding
  • Understanding what is meant by Child Sexual and Criminal Exploitation, Human Trafficking, Modern Slavery and Domestic Abuse
  • Recognising types of abuse, associated signs and indicators
  • Identifying adults at risk and other vulnerable people
  • Identifying suspicious activities
  • Knowing how and who they can report concerns to

You will be asked to pay the relevant fee when you are ready to book the course. Fee information can be found at the Blue Lamp Trust website.

The course has three modules and can take approximately one and a half hours to complete.

If you prefer, you can complete each module separately (approximately 20 minutes per module) over a period of time, e.g. one module per day. However, once you have begun a module, you must finish it.

Once you have successfully completed all three modules there will be a test. The test has 10 questions based on what you have learned. To pass you need to get 70% and have a maximum of three attempts to pass the test.

If you fail the test three times, you will need to pay for the course and re-take the test.

For full information about the course and what you need to do, visit the Blue Lamp Trust website.
