Description | Cinema. Originally ?The Empire Cinema? and substantially altered to its present appearance in 1936. The 1936 building contained a Palm Court Coffee Room with Ballroom above and a cinema to seat 1750 patrons. Alterations commissioned by C K Deeming and designed by architect Archibald Hurley Robinson. Art Deco ?exemplar? sadly spoilt by crude canopy/fascia above main entrance. Substantially altered internally to provide multiple screens. Hathernware cream tiles to upper facade including a central feature turret with angled facets rising high above the parapet. Parapets dressed with blue glazed copings surmounting a decorative frieze of Art Deco motifs in blue and green tiles. Parapet conceals flat roof. |
