A weekly club set up in Charnwood to support young people with disabilities and their families, has received funding through a Charnwood Community Grant.

Leicester-based charity Menphys, has set up a class on a Saturday morning at Gorse Covert Community Centre for people aged 8-25 with disabilities to increase interaction with others, take part in physical activities and gain more independence.

The scheme has been supported by Charnwood Borough Council through a community grant of £2,044.

The Council has supported 16 projects in its latest round of community grants funding with a total of £40,000 awarded.

Cllr Liz Blackshaw, the Council’s lead member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “Menphys offer a vital service to families across the county and I am really pleased that the Council has been able to support them in setting up a class in Charnwood.

“Charnwood Community Grants help support a range of projects in the borough each year. I would encourage all community groups and projects to look into the support they can receive from the Council through the community grants scheme.”

Menphys has been supporting families and young people with additional needs across Leicester and Leicestershire for 50 years.

Ian Caldwell, chief executive at Menphys said: “We are so proud to be able to support families and young people across the whole of Leicestershire.

“The classes we put on for those with learning difficulties and additional needs help both the individuals and their families massively and can help teach them valuable skills for the future whilst offering a helping hand to their parents and carers.

“We are grateful to receive this Charnwood Community Grant and it will go a long way in allowing us to run these classes.”

The class takes place every Saturday morning at Gorse Covert Community Centre from 10am-1pm.

Menphys also offer classes at their hub based in South Wigston and at Barley Croft Community Centre in Leicester.
