Consultation launched on proposed changes to parking charges

Published: Tue 24th September, 2024

A consultation has been launched by Charnwood Borough Council over proposals to make changes to charges at its car parks in Loughborough.

The Council says the current parking charges have been unchanged for 12 years and during that time costs have risen significantly.

It says it is proposing increases to help ensure it can continue to provide high-quality car parks for people to use in Loughborough.

The proposed changes include increasing an hour’s parking from 60p to £1 and for a full day from £6 to £7 at some locations. New charges are being proposed for evenings and Sundays.

The consultation has now opened and runs until 11:59pm on Sunday 20 October, 2024.

More information about the proposals and how to respond to the survey can be found on the Council website. Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/parkingchargesconsultation2024.

Cllr Liz Blackshaw, the Council’s lead member for parking, said: “We are proposing to make some changes to parking charges in Loughborough and have launched a consultation. We welcome people’s views and they will be considered before any final decision has been taken.”

The Council says its operating costs for the car parks have increased by 27 per cent and revenue has dropped by 15 per cent since 2019. As an example, electricity costs for the car parks over the past five years have more than doubled to over £90,000 a year.

Any surplus revenue from car parks goes towards services such as street cleaning, maintaining street furniture and tackling enviro crime like fly-tipping. Any drop in revenue means those services have to find funding from elsewhere or make cuts.

Anyone requiring a paper copy of the survey, can collect one from the Council’s offices in Southfields Road, Loughborough.
