Council Leader's statement on English Devolution White Paper

The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Jewel Miah, has issued a statement following the Government’s publication of the English Devolution White Paper.
Cllr Miah said: “I welcome the new Government’s intention to devolve more power and funding from central government to the regions.
“We are best placed to understand our local economies and communities and bring forward investment to make lives better for our residents.
“It will take some time to fully assess the implications of the White Paper, but I would like to assure residents of Charnwood that we as a Council will be doing what’s best for our residents.
“I am open to the area being part of a new strategic authority with a directly elected Mayor if that means we can secure investment and stimulate economic growth within our communities.
“I acknowledge the government’s proposal to simplify local government structures in areas such as Leicestershire where we have two tiers of local government, and sometimes people get confused with which council delivers which service. It is now time for Council Leaders in Leicestershire to work together with the Government to establish a new model of local government fit for the future.
“As these proposals are at an early stage and need to be fully considered, I would like to assure residents that it remains business as usual at Charnwood Borough Council and we remain focussed on the delivery of services to our residents."
