The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Jewel Miah has thanked local communities, emergency services and other agencies for pulling together to respond to flooding in the borough over the past couple of days.
Cllr Miah says the effort will continue to help communities impacted by flooding.
Cllr Miah said: “It is devastating to see people’s homes and businesses impacted by flooding and my thoughts are with everyone affected.
“I would like to praise local communities for supporting each other in these difficult times. I have been out in the borough and seen residents helping each other and showing the great community spirit that exists in Charnwood.
“The Council has been working hard with other agencies including the fire service, police, county council and others to respond to the floods and support people. That will continue.
“We set up two rest centres in Barrow and Loughborough to help people who had been evacuated and fortunately they are not required at present. We are closely monitoring the situation and keeping this under review.
“We have assisted several people with emergency temporary accommodation, and I would urge anyone whose home has flooded and they have nowhere to go to contact the Council.
“We will also have officers visiting the areas impacted by flooding to offer advice and gather information.
“Our open spaces contractor has been out clearing watercourses on Council land and delivering sandbags to vulnerable people.
“We will continue to work with other agencies in the coming days.
“Clearly, preventing and responding to flooding is the responsibility of multiple agencies and we also have to factor in the extreme weather we have experienced and incredibly high-water levels.
“I would encourage people to follow the advice and guidance being shared by multiple agencies around travelling safely and what to do if your home is flooded.”
