A new multi-use games area (MUGA) in Birstall is on course to be completed by the end of this month.

The MUGA is being created on School Lane playing fields and will be used for a range of sporting activities, including football, basketball and cricket. It will feature games for people of all abilities to enjoy.

The project, being led by Birstall Parish Council and delivered by Ten Construction Ltd, has been supported by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

It was awarded £150,000 from the UKSPF after being one of 11 schemes chosen by Charnwood Borough Council.

The borough council was allocated £4million from the fund to invest in communities, support local businesses and improve skills.

Work is well underway on the new MUGA in Birstall and it is due to be ready by the beginning of April.

Cllr Jennifer Tillotson, Charnwood Borough Council’s lead member for economic development, regeneration and town centres, said: "We are delighted to see the new multi-use games area in Birstall taking shape.

“Investing in high-quality recreational facilities is a key part of our commitment to supporting vibrant, healthy communities across Charnwood.

“The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is enabling us to deliver projects like this that will have a lasting impact, encouraging more people of all ages and abilities to get active and enjoy sport.

“We look forward to seeing local residents make the most of this fantastic new facility."

Sue Coulson, Birstall Parish Council clerk, said: “The new MUGA will be a brilliant addition to Birstall, offering residents a fantastic space to enjoy a variety of sports and activities.

“We are grateful for the support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Charnwood Borough Council, which has made this project possible.

“With work progressing well, we’re excited to see the MUGA completed and ready for the community to use in just a few weeks' time."

Marcus Reader, managing director of Ten Construction Ltd, said: "We are proud to be delivering this fantastic new facility for the Birstall community.

"The multi-use games area has been designed to provide a high-quality, accessible space where people of all abilities can come together and enjoy sport.
