Background information

The Nanpantan Road cemetery has been developed in phases. The first phase included space for over 5,000 burials which on current burial trends will last for 100 years.

Work started on the new cemetery in 2020 but its completion was delayed by the pandemic. It was due to open in 2022 but the extreme hot weather in the summer made it difficult for the planting to take hold and it was not ready to open until now.

Around 200 new trees have been planted, as well as a wide range of plants and shrubs, all of which will combine to provide food and habitat resources for wildlife.

Over 400 metres of new beech hedging has been planted to provide corridors, foraging and protection for birds, mammals and reptiles.

Parking at the new cemetery is available and vehicles can gain access via Nanpantan Road. The car park is free and can also be used to access the Outwoods by walking uphill on the public footpath between the adjacent fields.

A new multi-use games area has been created for residents close by as part of the project to allow for mini tennis, netball, basketball and football.

The current cemetery in Leicester Road is expected to run out of space within the next two years.

The Council carried out a consultation exercise in 2018 to choose the location for a new one which is near Nanpantan Sports Ground and on land owned by the Council.

The town’s crematorium will remain in Leicester Road.
