Consultation launched for new Charnwood Air Quality Strategy
Published: Mon 10th February, 2025
People are being asked to have their say on a new strategy about improving the air quality across Charnwood.
The draft Charnwood Air Quality Strategy, developed by the borough council, sets out how the Council will work with residents, stakeholders and businesses to improve air quality in the area.
A consultation has been launched for residents and businesses to have their say on the draft strategy, make suggestions or raise any concerns they may have about the air quality in the borough.
The consultation will run until 11.59pm on Monday, 24 March 2025.
The Council is clear that improving air quality in the area is the responsibility of multiple agencies, businesses and local communities.
Cllr Beverley Gray, the Council’s lead member for climate action and net zero, said: “I’m very pleased that we are able to present the draft air quality strategy which sets out our ambition to improve air quality in the area in the interest of public health and the environment.
“The air we breathe is so important to every day health, but it has to be a collaborative effort to make it better. We will work with local partners, businesses and residents to improve air quality and the strategy sets out some clear actions for the council.
“That is why we have launched a consultation about the air quality strategy so residents, businesses and partners can have their say on what is currently included in the strategy, their concerns surrounding air quality in Charnwood and put forward views for consideration.”
The points of the draft Charnwood Air Quality Strategy include:
- the actions that the borough council will deliver between 2025 and 2030 in order to reduce concentrations of air pollutants and exposure to air pollution
- reducing health inequalities from air pollution
- raising public awareness of the health implications of poor air quality
- reducing domestic, industrial and agricultural emissions
- reducing emissions from road transport.

The Charnwood Air Quality Strategy has been developed following on from the air quality in Charnwood improving significantly over the past decade. Last year, the Department for Environmental, Food and Rural affairs (DEFRA) instructed that the four Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) in Charnwood must be removed due to the improvements in these areas.
The strategy aims to see the continual improvement of the air quality in the borough. It is expected that the finalised Air Quality Strategy is published in the summer of 2025.
