By becoming a community volunteer litter picker in Charnwood, you can help make the borough a cleaner and more attractive place to live, work, and visit.

Any time you can give to help keep your local area tidy and litter-free is hugely appreciated by Charnwood Borough Council and the community.

Litter picking do's and don'ts

Do’s

Don’ts

  • Remain safe and seen at all times.
  • Consider completing your own risk assessment for your litter pick.
  • Ensure suitable clothing and footwear is worn and protective gloves if preferred.
  • Report any found needles, asbestos and other hazardous material to us directly by calling 01509 634 563 to ensure it’s safe and correct removal.
  • Please complete the litter form to arrange collection of the litter pick. Always leave the waste in a safe place and always ensure that the bags of waste are a significant distance away from the highway.

  • For health and safety reasons, please do not litter pick any motorways do not litter pick any A roads such as the A6 or A46.
  • Do not litter pick any road (especially country lanes between Villages) that have either narrow or no verges as these roads are often 60mph roads and are dangerous.
  • Avoid entering watercourses of any type (canals, brooks, dykes etc.).
  • Do not litter pick deep ditches or steep embankments anywhere.
  • Do not litter pick canal towpaths – this land is owned and managed by The Canal & Rivers Trust.
  • Please avoid litter picking all private land including parkland and woods.
  • Please avoid litter picking Parish Council owned land (except where the Parish Council are aware and will dispose of all collected litter).
  • Please avoid litter picking open countryside as this area is not required to be attended to through our street cleaning contract with Serco.
