Moving home is a big task and it is important to inform the right organisations about your move.

This will enable your accounts to be correctly updated.

Gas and Electricity Supply

To find out who supplies the gas and electricity in your new home you can visit National Grid - Who is my electricity supplier? for your current electricity provider and visit Find My Supplier for your current gas provider. You can also call National Grid on 0345 601 5972, select Option 2 to find out who supplies electricity to your new property, and you can call Cadent on 0800 389 8000 to find out who supplies gas to your new property.

Once you are aware of the supplier, we advise you contact the utility provider to set up an account. The gas meter will be capped. You must register for supply of both electricity and gas and be in credit for both if metered, then request for the gas meter to be uncapped.

Requesting for your gas meter to be uncapped

You should contact our gas engineers PH Jones on 01928 249496 to arrange an appointment for them to come and uncap your meter.

Both gas and electricity meters must be in credit at the time of the appointment. Please note: not all properties have a gas supply.

Cooking Appliances

If you wish to install a cooker, you do not need Charnwood Borough Council's permission. The cooker must be installed by a qualified Gas Safe Engineer or a registered Electrical Engineer.

Water Supply

The water may have been turned off at the stop tap. This is often located under the kitchen sink. You will need to locate the stop tap and turn it back on, Charnwood Borough Council will not do this for you.

You will need to contact Severn Trent to register as a new occupier. They can be contacted via their online form or by calling 03457 500500.

If you do not already have a water meter in the property, you will need to have one installed and this is compulsory. Please arrange this with Severn Trent, you will not need to notify the council or ask for permission for this.
