In an effort to cater to as many of our residents and visitors as possible, we offer free access to interpreting and translation services appropriate to everyone's needs.

Interpreting and Translation Policy
Language interpreting
Our interpreting service allows us to communicate with customers who may find it difficult to read, write and speak in English.
If your enquiry is straightforward it may be possible to provide an interpreter right away. In other cases a special appointment will be made when an interpreter can be present.
Languages currently available include, but are not limited to:
- Afrikaans
- Bengali
- French
- Gujarati
- Hindi
- Punjabi
- Urdu
Sign language
We offer British sign language for people who are deaf or have a hearing impairment. If you, a relative, or a friend, would benefit from this service please inform a member of staff upon arrival at our offices.
We also have access to a telephone interpreting service, which is particularly useful for home visits or if a person is unable to come to see us in person. To use this service, please telephone our switchboard on 01509 634666 and ask for an interpreter.
Arrangements can also be made to translate important documents into other languages.
Alternative formats and hearing loops
We can provide written material in the following alternative formats for people who are blind or visually impaired:
- Large print (up to font size 24 point)
- Braille
- Audio
Hearing/induction loop systems are installed at the following reception points and council buildings;
- Customer Service Centre - Southfields
- Council Chamber - Town Hall
