Do you live in a block of flats? Is the internal communal area clear?
We carry out inspections of our blocks of flats each month to ensure we are compliant with fire safety regulations. During these inspections we often note that items have been left in internal communal areas, including landings, under stairwells and in some cases in communal cupboards.
It is very important to understand that you cannot use communal areas as an extension of your home, as this represents a breach of your tenancy agreement and can put you and your neighbours at risk.
Items left in communal areas pose a risk to other residents and anybody else who enters the block. In the event of a fire should the area become smoke filled people could trip over these items causing injury or preventing escape. The safety of residents and visitors to our blocks is of paramount importance to us as is the legal requirement to comply with fire safety regulations.
Items in communal areas can also impact on the communal cleaning and could result in the contractor not being able to clean an area.
Please refrain from leaving anything except a small non-slip doormat or small area of carpeting outside your front door.
If we notice items in our internal communal areas, a warning note will be attached to the item to advise that it must be removed immediately. If the item is still in place when we return, we will remove the item(s) and charge you for the cost of removal or storage.
Remember – keeping communal areas clear = keeping people safe.
